Hybrid Cloud

When purely public cloud services are too insecure or not fast enough, and a purely private cloud is cost-prohibitive, enterprises with complex computing demands could seem to be without options.

Enter Hybrid Cloud – a bespoke blend of public, private, remote and on-premises cloud, ideal for organisations with varied, or especially demanding, computing needs.

What is Hybrid Cloud?

A Hybrid Cloud incorporates both public and private cloud elements in a custom mix for each client, depending on their specific needs. A Hybrid Cloud implementation might include:

  • Resources from a public cloud provider such as Microsoft Azure;
  • A more local hosted private cloud instance; and
  • An on-premises instance, integrated into the public and private cloud environment.

From the organisation’s point of view, a Hybrid Cloud should be seamless, with the Hypervisor and Cloud Configuration software provisioning the various elements to applications behind the scenes.

The options for Hybrid Cloud are almost endless, and can be tailored to each organisation’s specific needs – and changed later, if required.

One example might see a banking client maintaining all customer records and core data locally, but using public cloud resources to conduct Big Data analytics that would be resource-prohibitive to perform locally.

Another example might see an organisation with highly seasonal demand – such as a gift retailer, ticket seller or a government department receiving user submissions to a deadline. For these organisations, a Hybrid Cloud environment can grow or shrink with demand – even if the demand is sudden and unexpected.

By combining these different cloud elements, organisations can enjoy benefits such as:

  • Security and Compliance: sensitive data, such as financial information remains on the local servers, while less critical data and tasks can use the public cloud elements.
  • Cost Effectiveness: Enterprises only need to maintain a smaller IT infrastructure internally, for high-priority tasks, while utilizing pay-on-demand cloud services for the rest.
  • Performance: For organisations with intensive workloads, these can be kept local to maintain performance and reduce latency, with the remote cloud taking on lower-intensity tasks such as storage.
  • Scalability: Hybrid clouds are ideal for organisations with seasonal or fluctuating computing demands: the cloud can scale quickly when faced with increased demand, by simply adding additional public cloud resources – and can shrink down once demand subsides.
  • Flexibility: Enterprises can use a Hybrid Cloud to keep core computing elements close by, while using the power of the cloud for tasks such as Big Data analytics, non-critical but high-traffic websites, or storage of large but non-critical datasets.
